Happy Birthday in Portuguese – Lyrics

Parabéns a você

Nesta data querida

Muitas felicidades

Muitos anos de vida

Hoje é dia de festa

Cantam as nossas almas

Para o menino/a [name]

Uma salva de palmas

Hoje o/a [name] faz anos

Porque Deus assim quis

O que nós desejamos

É que seja feliz

Tenha tudo de bom

Do que a Vida contém

Tenha muita saúde

E amigos também

English translation:

Happy Birthday to you

On this dear date

Lot´s of happiness

Many years to live

Today is celebration day

Our souls sing

A round of applause

 for the birthday boy/girl (name)

[Name] has a birthday

Because God wanted it so

What we wish

Is for him/her to be happy

May he/she have only good things

Of what life is made of

May he/she have lots of health

And friends too

How To Say Happy Birthday In Portuguese

You can say Happy Birthday as “Parabéns” or “Felicidades”. Both mean something like “Congratulations” and both can also be used in other situations when you want to congratulate someone – like when a baby is born, for example.

How To Say Your Age In Portuguese

If someone asks you “Quantos anos tens?”, you should know they are asking you “How old are you”, or literally “How many years do you have?”.

We use the verb to have instead of to be for saying our age, so you should answer:

“Tenho ____(insert your age) years.”

This literally means “I have _____ years”, as in “I have collected so many years until now”… See the idea?

Since we are at it, you can see here how to conjugate the verb to have – TER in Portuguese –  in the Present tense:

Eu tenho

Tu tens

Ele/ Ela/ Você tem

Nós temos

Vocês têm

Eles/ Elas têm

Ex: “Eu tenho 20 anos” – I am 20 years old.

” Ele tem 30 anos” – He is 30 years old.

TER is an irregular verb, like SER and ESTAR. There are many regular verbs and you can also find out how to conjugate them, by clicking here. If you also want to check verbs with prepositions, make sure to go here.

  1. Very clear and interesting. I liked how you explained how the age is talked about. How many years do you have vs how old are you? If I wanted to learn this language I would definitely go to your site. The singing was a nice addition. Good luck with your site.

  2. how awesome! What a fun way to get someone interested in learning Portuguese.
We had friends who were from Brazil, and I considered learning the language, but we moved apart so that I would not have an opportunity to practice what I learned.

Still, it is such a beautiful language!

You might actually inspire me to take action and finally learn it!

    Blessings!

  3. My girlfriend is from Portuguese and I would love to learn something that she would appreciate and honestly I really want to surprise her.
I also like that you give examples of age, sentences etc. since I really suck at memorizing but I learn way better and faster with examples.

    1. Hi Furkan!

  4. Hi, Mia.

Oh my gosh, your page is so adorable. I love Portuguese. I just finished learning Spanish, so I understand quite a bit. I was looking for a European page that offers to learn the language. You know, I want to be able to read the books from my favorite Author, Paulo Coelho, one day in Portuguese. I know he’s Brazilian, which makes me wonder what’s the difference between Portuguese from Brazil and Portuguese from Portugal?

I’m originally from Austria but live in the USA, and a friend and I plan to go back to Europe next year to make a tour through most countries. We will definitely include Portugal after Spain, so I wish to be able to communicate by then.

Awesome website; sweetest language ever, and you sang the song so beautifully.

I’ll be back and maybe you’ll be my tutor soon.

Meanwhile, I’m sending you many blessings.

    Warm wishes,

    Alexandra

    1. Olá Alexandra!
Your name is read like “Aleshandra” here, did you know? The “x” in this case sounds like “sh”. Just thought you’d like to know 🙂
I am really glad you liked my website and that you are thinking of learning the language. If you want to learn it remotely meanwhile, you can check my online course (under the tab with the same name :)).
The differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese are mainly in pronunciation but there are also other small differences. You can check my post about it here:

  5. What a cool post! This would be such a net thing to learn. I have always loved the way that the Portuguese language sounds although I know very little of it. I have met a lot of Brazilian’s due to the martial art that I do and always wished I could communicate with them a little better. Although I probably won’t be singing them happy birthday LOL (never know), I see that your site definitely has a lot that I can learn from! Also was really cool to hear you sing it. You have a beautiful singing voice! Thanks for the great post!!

    1. Hi Dan!
Thank you for your comment. I am glad you found my singing good 🙂 it makes me happy.
Be careful when singing happy birthday like this to Brazilian people because I am not completely sure the lyrics are exactly the same he he.
Thank you so much once again!

      Mia.
