How To Say Happy Birthday In Portuguese
You can say Happy Birthday as “Parabéns” or “Felicidades”. Both mean something like “Congratulations” and both can also be used in other situations when you want to congratulate someone – like when a baby is born, for example.
How To Say Your Age In Portuguese
If someone asks you “Quantos anos tens?”, you should know they are asking you “How old are you”, or literally “How many years do you have?”.
We use the verb to have instead of to be for saying our age, so you should answer:
“Tenho ____(insert your age) years.”
This literally means “I have _____ years”, as in “I have collected so many years until now”… See the idea?
Since we are at it, you can see here how to conjugate the verb to have – TER in Portuguese – in the Present tense:
Eu tenho
Tu tens
Ele/ Ela/ Você tem
Nós temos
Vocês têm
Eles/ Elas têm
Ex: “Eu tenho 20 anos” – I am 20 years old.
” Ele tem 30 anos” – He is 30 years old.

Thank you for this lovely video and the full verses! I’ve always been left feeling a bit stupid when my Portuguese family sing Happy Birthday to a family member because it’s such a different song to the (very simple) words in English! I’m going to try and learn this properly so that I’ll be able to join in when Covid allows me to travel back there again from the UK.

I am so glad you enjoyed the video and the fact that I wrote the verses 🙂 I know that the Portuguese birthday song has a lot of verses and different words to learn. Bear in mind that maybe your family just sings the first verse and not the other two…the first verse is the most known one!

What a cool post! This would be such a net thing to learn. I have always loved the way that the Portuguese language sounds although I know very little of it. I have met a lot of Brazilian’s due to the martial art that I do and always wished I could communicate with them a little better. Although I probably won’t be singing them happy birthday LOL (never know), I see that your site definitely has a lot that I can learn from! Also was really cool to hear you sing it. Oh my gosh, your page is so adorable. I love Portuguese. I just finished learning Spanish, so I understand quite a bit. I was looking for a European page that offers to learn the language. You know, I want to be able to read the books from my favorite Author, Paulo Coelho, one day in Portuguese. I know he’s Brazilian, which makes me wonder what’s the difference between Portuguese from Brazil and Portuguese from Portugal?
I’m originally from Austria but live in the USA, and a friend and I plan to go back to Europe next year to make a tour through most countries. We will definitely include Portugal after Spain, so I wish to be able to communicate by then.

My girlfriend is from Portuguese and I would love to learn something that she would appreciate and honestly I really want to surprise her.
I also like that you give examples of age, sentences etc. since I really suck at memorizing but I learn way better and faster with examples.
