I took the A1 course, which was great, and have signed up for the A2 course. I also had individual tutoring sessions directly with Mia. Her lessons are always clear and interesting, and she has a great way of explaining things in a way that makes them easy to understand. She has a great attitude and is always encouraging and supportive – while also trying to push me beyond my comfort zone in speaking, which is an important way to grow. I recommend Mia’s classes highly, whether online at your own pace, or one-on-one with her through Skype. Thanks Mia, for being such a great resource for those of us who want to learn European Portuguese!

Genuine expert’ is the phrase that comes to mind when I think about Mia’s knowledge of Portugal and the Portuguese language. I completed Mia’s A1 course and currently enrolled in A2. I also attend individual tutoring sessions with Mia via Skype. The sessions prepared me for my last trip to Portugal, helping to improve my pronunciation, sentence structure, and knowledge about Portuguese culture. Her courses deliver in a clear, concise, friendly manner and spotlight the language and grammar skills used today in Portugal. ”No matter how well my daily Portuguese studies are going—some great, some not so great–Mia always makes sure I leave with a smile and encouragement.” If you want to become fluent in Portuguese or learn some language survival skills before a trip to Portugal, Mia’s “Learn European Portuguese Online Course,” and individual Skype lessons earn my highest recommendation.

I live in Plymouth UK where Portuguese courses are not available. I was looking for a European Portuguese online course which is not very easy to find and by chance I found Mia’s course. Since then, I bought all her courses because I enjoyed them very much. They are easy to follow, Mia explains all clearly, in a relaxed way. She also will answer to any questions or inquiries sent to her via email. I also found the pdf notes very helpful, because I use them when away from the computer. I highly recommend this online course.

Students of European Portuguese have many choices in how to learn. Mia’s lessons stand apart from the others; she combines a video classroom setting with lifetime access and Q&A by e-mail. She also has a sincere wish for her students to learn. I highly recommend her.

I know how to say ‘my name is Ivan’, ‘thank you’, ‘how are you’, and ‘I’m good and you?’, which means that I already speak Portuguese. 😀 It would be cool to learn another language, so why not start with Portuguese. I’m going to bookmark your site. I don’t have time in my day at the moment, but soon I hope I’ll have an hour or two to start with the beginner’s course. I like the language.
Hi Ivan,
thank you very much for your comment.
It’s great that you already know some things you can say in Portuguese =)
I hope you will find the time to start studying the language, for now you could already use learning apps, e.g. Memrise, with which you could study let’s say 15 minutes a day.

Hi Mia,
You write English beautifully!! Learning another language takes a patient teacher and a LOT of practice. It’s pretty amazing you know so many languages. I understand that knowing multiple languages is more useful in Europe. Is European Portuguese really different from Brazil?
Cheers!
Carrie
Hi Carrie,
thank you very much for your feedback.
You can check my post about the differences between Portuguese from Portugal and Brazil. There are some, mostly in pronunciation and grammar structure.

Mia
Hi, Mia. My hobby is learning languages. I have been studying a new language for years. I speak Hungarian, Serbian, Croatian at the native level. My English, German, French and Italian language is what I have to improve. Now I started Chinese though it doesn’t really go. Reading your post perhaps I should learn Portuguese. Thanks for sharing with us this helpful article.
Olá!
I am glad that you found my website and post useful! I do hope that you decide to start learning Portuguese and if you do so, do not forget to come back to my page for more material!
Thank you for your comment.
Beijinhos,
Mia.
Portuguese has always been a language of interest for me. I am not sure of my starting point. I know zero Portuguese but I am very familiar with the language (written) due to being completely fluent in Spanish. Beginners, I think would be pretty easy and maybe not challenging enough – your thoughts?
Hi Derek,
thank you very much for your feedback.
Being fluent in Spanish will definitely help you learning Portuguese. Nevertheless, especially the pronunciation of words can be quite different to Spanish, so I would suggest to anyways start with the A level. Also some part of grammar, words, etc. is different. In case you see it is too easy, you can always go to the B level =)
Regards
Mia
Where was this when I was learning languages!? I could have used a little of this training before I went to Brazil for a few weeks after college.
It’s amazing that online resources like yours exist today. You’re providing such great opportunities for those that need to learn Portuguese.
Great site!
Cheers!
Hi!
Thank you for your comment 🙂

I am glad you liked my page!

Mia
Hi Mariana
What a great idea.
I love to be able to speak the language when I visit a country, so I will definitely be revisiting your website,
and I am considering taking your course.
I will also send your link to my daughter who loves to visit Portugal.
Thank you so much
Chrissie
Thank you so much! Please do share my link and let me know if you or your daughter need help learning Portuguese!
Kind regards,

Hi Mia, amazing article, I loved that you added YouTube video, telling about yourself and what to expect from this course. It’s great that you have listed what you will get with each course and even added other people reviews, who already had taken your course. I never have Portugal before, but I have been to Spain lots of times and this year I’m planning to finally visit Portugal for the first time and your course for beginners can be very useful to me. I was learning Spanish for a while and know that Portuguese and Spanish languages are similar, do you think it will be easier for me to learn Portuguese if I already know a little bit of Spanish?
Hi Marius,
thank you very much for your comment =)
Yes, Spanish will help you when learning Portuguese since both languages have similarities in terms of grammar and words. However, the pronunciation is quite different, so be prepared 😉
I am looking forward to seeing you in my course.
Regards
Mia
I am happy to have found your website as Portugal is on my list of places to visit. I had no idea that there were variations on Portuguese, so I am glad that I found out now!
I think your prices are very reasonable, compared to other programs that I have purchased. I hope to be able to find good cafe’s and great beaches by the time I am done!
Hi Irma,
thank you very much for your comment.
Make sure to check out the best beaches near Porto 🙂
Regards
Mia
I’ve always wanted to learn a new language but being English we are typically very lazy as most people can speak it!
I’m thinking of spending time in a country where you NEED to know the language and I was thinking Spain, but maybe Portugal (or Brazil!) may be a better option.
How many languages do you speak Mia? The course looks great. I’m going to check it out!
Mike
Hi Mike,
thank you very much for your comment.
I speak Portuguese, English, Spanish, a bit of French, German & Dutch and then basics of some other language (e.g. Estonian).
Spain, Brazil & Portugal are all nice countries, it’s a hard choice 😉
Btw, in Portugal you will come along quite well with English as well. Most of the people understand/speak English and are helpful to foreigners.
Regards
Mia
Thank you Mia for your interactive video explanation on what’s inside your course.

Portuguese is spoken in different countries and can be slightly different, for example Brazilian Portuguese vs. European Portuguese..
Nevertheless, we understand each other.
