  1. I took the A1 course, which was great, and have signed up for the A2 course. I also had individual tutoring sessions directly with Mia. Her lessons are always clear and interesting, and she has a great way of explaining things in a way that makes them easy to understand. She has a great attitude and is always encouraging and supportive – while also trying to push me beyond my comfort zone in speaking, which is an important way to grow. I recommend Mia’s classes highly, whether online at your own pace, or one-on-one with her through Skype. Thanks Mia, for being such a great resource for those of us who want to learn European Portuguese!

    1. Thank you very much, Derek!
It has been a pleasure being your teacher =)

  2. I just finished the A2 online course and I liked it a lot. Although I already knew most of the material, it has helped me clarify some doubts as well as learn something new. The classes are very pleasant, brief and to the point. They cover topics of grammar, writing, vocabulary, reading, listening, typical expressions and a very cool part of phonetics (I love how european portuguese sounds!) Mia explains very well and her attitude is always positive. In addition, Mia solves any question via web or email. The PDFs are available and are great for prepare or review the classes. I definitely recommend the course!

    1. Your explanations are very clear.
Do continue your good work of spreading the portuguese language throughout the WORLD.

      1. Thank you for your feedback! =)

  3. Hi Mia

    1. Hi Lourette,
      thank you for your comment.
Once you enter the lecture in teachable you can find a button “download” directly below the video.
The same applies for the presentation. For example, it says “Slides-A1-Lecture-1.pdf” directly below the presentation. You just need to click and then the download will start.
Please let me know if you need further support.
      Enjoy the course 🙂
      Regards
      Mia

  4. This might have come at the right time for us as we are seriously looking at selling up and moving to either Spain or Portugal in the next 4 years and as we would be looking at the none tourist spots then learning a new language is a requirement. I know this is probably a hard question to answer, but any ideas how long it could take to become capable in Portuguese? The $7 cost is a steal and we shall certainly be bookmarking your site so watch this space. Great site and thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Mick,

thank you very much for your comment.

It’s hard to say how many months it will take for you to speak Portuguese fluently, since this is depending a lot from your motivation, your ability to learn a new language, your effort, etc. If you want, you can check out the best way to learn European Portuguese. In there, I explain how students can study Portuguese with different learning approaches.

The A1-Course will be around 10-13h recorded video material in total. To this, you have to add the time you need for practice the language. Once you completed the A1 Course, you will be able to have a basic conversation in Portuguese.

Once you are in Portugal to live here, your progress should be much faster, since you will be in contact with the language every day. Until then, you can search for a language partner / tutor / teacher on the language learning platform iTalki, so you can practice already speaking and understanding.

There are many people, especially from Germany, France, Switzerland, United States and U.K., that come to live in Portugal. I am sure you would enjoy it 🙂 If you look around at my website, there are also many articles about the culture in Portugal and nice places to visit.

      Best,
      Mia

  5. As a language lover myself, I really appreciate what you’re offering here. What you offer is comparable to many other language programs including one of my favorites. I like to learn with quizzes and lectures so this is definitely something I would like to try. I look forward to seeing more! Thanks for this.

    1. Hi Whitney,

thank you very much for your comment. Yes, quizzes are a great way to practice the language in a fun way.

I hope to see you around 🙂

      Mia

  6. So do you think that anyone can learn Portuguese? My wife and I were thinking about learning a new language…something to have for when we retire and travel in Europe.

I’ve heard it can be really hard for older people (not that old…but old enough) to learn a new language. I imagine though that this kind of training and support is one of the best ways to learn.

Thanks! I think we will at least check out a lesson or two!

    1. Hello!

Thank you very much for your comment.

Yes, I think definitely that anyone can learn Portuguese / a new language! Age is no barrier to study a new language. I have few students that are already retired and travel now through the world, learning new languages. In my opinion it’s a great way to stay healthy and enjoy life =)

Just study with your own pace, keep your motivation (travelling through Europe) and take small steps, but effective ones. Speaking a new language opens a whole new world of opportunities and it’s never to late to start learning.

I hope this helps and I would be very happy to see you around.

      Thanks again!

      Mia

  7. This looks interesting! I’m learning Spanish right now, so I hope when I’ll start Portuguese is gonna be easier for me. I’ve been to Lisbon for two months and I fell in love with the country!
Are Portuguese and Spanish similar to each other?
And how many months do you believe it’s gonna take someone to speak Portuguese fluently?
    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Jenny,

thank you very much for your comment.

Knowing Spanish is definitely an advantage when you learn Portuguese, since part of the grammar and vocabulary is similar. Nevertheless, the European Portuguese pronunciation is quite different from Spanish, so don’t worry if you don’t understand the people in the beginning.

  8. Hi Mia! I hope you’re doing well!

A quick question: What would you say is the average completion time of the program?

A couple of friends are planning a trip to Portugal in a few months and one of them is from Portugal but does not speak the language. She was very interested in learning Portuguese a bit before departure though…

Anyway the program looks very nice and easy congratulations!

    Have a great day 🙂

    1. Hi PJ,

Thank you very much for your comment!

Each lecture is between 45 and 90 minutes, let’s say in average 1h. So far, there are 7 lectures online and I am currently working on the remaining 4-5 lectures which will then complete the A1-Course. Of course, it depends also on the pace each student is going through the course. That’s one advantage of my European Portuguese Language Course, that you can do it in your own pace.

That’s great that your friends are going to visit Portugal. If they are visiting Porto they can check out the best beaches near Porto and enjoy some of the many parks in and around Porto/Gaia. If they are going in the south they should definitely check out the Algarve.

Your friends can also check out a list of European Portuguese words and useful Portuguese phrases. All of this in combination with the first lectures of the A1-Beginner-Course should be a great preparation for the holidays in Portugal and then they can even impress natives by knowing some expressions in Portuguese! =)

      Have a great day, too!

      Mia

  9. Hi!

Thank you for sharing such a great opportunity to learn a new foreign language. I believe it shouldn’t be a problem for me. I have basic knowledge of Spanish, and since Portuguese is similar, I believe I can master it with less stress.

I’m just curious, what is the difference between the European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese? Is it the dialect, pronunciation or some vocabulary? Because I know that this is the case for European and Latin American versions of Spanish.

    1. Hi German,

thank you very much for your comment.

Your knowledge in Spanish will definitely help since there are some parts of the grammar / vocabulary that are similar. The European Portuguese pronunciation though is a quite different. You can check out the Portuguese Alphabet with its sounds to get an idea 🙂

      See you around,
      Mia

  10. Hi Mia, it’s great you are filling a gap in the market to help people learn Portuguese. You saying about learning new languages for love reminded me of years ago when I met a Spanish waiter on holiday (such a cliche, I know), but I thought we were in love and as he spoke hardly any English I paid for very expensive Spanish lessons and crammed for 6 weeks before I went out to visit him in Barcelona. The problem was, not only did he speak Catalan, but I was just too shy to actually test out anything I had learnt out on him. I guess it’s just good to be able to get actual practice with a first hand speaker of a language first! Needless to say, the relationship didn’t work out but I still love learning Spanish to this day.

My question is, do you think Portuguese is similar in any way to Spanish? I seem to find certain languages easier to learn than others, for example I can pick up Spanish quickly but have no hope of learning French, my brain just doesn’t like it. It would be interesting to see what a teacher would think about this. Thanks.

  11. Hi, I have always wanted to learn Portuguese but was afraid to start because I had heard that it is a very difficult language to learn. Is it very different from Spanish? I heard there are some similarities. Thank you for this course description. I might give it a try. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Hi!

Thank you very much for your comment.

It’s true, Spanish and Portuguese have a lot of similarities. If you speak already Spanish you will have an advantage learning Portuguese. However, the pronunciation is quite different.

If you want to learn the language you might also check out the best way to learn European Portuguese.

      Thanks and see you around,
      Mia.

  12. Wow – what an awesome post!
The course looks more than promising.
I love to learn new languages, speak 4 so far.
Maybe it’s time for a new one!
Thank you so much for sharing that!

    1. Hello!
Thank you very much for your feedback. Wow, 4 languages already. That’s great!
If you love to learn new languages I can only recommend you to study Portuguese. It’s an amazing language with a rich history.
In case you need anything, just let me know.
      Mia.

      1. Hi Mia,

          https://learn-portuguese.org/portuguese-online-course-beginners-a2-level

          Beijinhos,
          Mia.

  13. It looks like you are offering an amazing amount of knowledge for such a low price! I think that more people would want to learn a different language if courses were priced as low as yours!

    1. Hi Joseph,
thank you very much for your comment.
Yes, I want to give everyone the chance to learn Portuguese to a fair price. It’s true that compared to other courses or especially also 1-to-1 classes, my online course is much cheaper, while you can learn the exact same topics.
      Thanks and see you around,
      Mia.

  14. Hey Mia! I have been looking for a reliable and yet not so expensive online course so I can start learning Portuguese. The reason I want to learn is that I just love the country and that is definitely in the list of places I want to visit next. However, the reason I have not started learning Portuguese yet is because I find it pretty difficult, to be honest. There is some hope though, as I read your article I saw your passion on what you are doing and I will definitely wold love to try it out and I hope everything goes fine this time.

My question is: Is there any difference between the Portuguese that Brazil speaks and the one that is spoken in Portugal?

    -Hekuran

    1. Hi Hekuran,

Thank you very much for your comment.
Yes, Portugal is a lovely country. I am sure you’ll enjoy it!

I am always trying to make it as easy as possible for my students to learn Portuguese. If you face difficulties, you can also check out my post about the best ways to learn European Portuguese.

In general, there are slight differences between the Portuguese spoken in Brazil and Portugal, although we understand each other. It’s mostly about some grammar topics and words. You can check out another post which I wrote about this topic here:
      Brazilian vs European Portuguese

I hope this helps! If you have any further questions, just let me know =)

      Mia.

  15. This course will penetrate throughout the length and breadth of the online world. It is also equally an advantage for people who have the craze for learning European Portuguese language.
Readers can access the class directly from your own room and how cool is this. Not only that, but also the fees imposed for the class is quite low and reasonable which is $7 only.

I wish you THUMPING success and a great fun-filled experience of LEARNING to all the followers.

    Cheers!

    1. Hi there!
Thank you for your lovely review! In fact I think that one of the advantages of the course is that it is possible to learn from home at your own pace 🙂 I’m glad people see that potential!
Again, thank you very much for your review and feel free to come back!
      Beijinhos,
      Mia

  16. This looks like a wonderful course. I like how you’ve structured it and the price is great. My son in law speaks Portuguese and what a beautiful language it is. Your site is awesome and I’m looking forward to watching your video.
